So, you want to create a website—but you don’t know how to code.
Good news: you don’t need to.
With WordPress, you can build a professional-looking website without writing a single line of code. You don’t have to be a developer. You just need the right steps and the right tools.
Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Choose a Domain Name
Your domain name is your website address (like yourbusiness.com). Choose something short, easy to remember, and related to your brand.
Once you pick a name, register it through a domain provider like:
- Namecheap
- Google Domains
- GoDaddy
Step 2: Choose Web Hosting
Hosting is where your website lives. Think of it like renting space online.
Some beginner-friendly WordPress hosts:
- SiteGround
- Bluehost
- Hostinger
- WP Engine
Look for hosting that offers 1-click WordPress install—most good providers do.
Step 3: Install WordPress
Once you’ve signed up for hosting, install WordPress through the dashboard. This usually takes less than 5 minutes.
After that, you’ll get a login to access your WordPress admin panel (usually at yourdomain.com/wp-admin).
That’s where the magic happens.
Step 4: Pick a Theme
Themes control how your site looks.
Start with a free, beginner-friendly theme like:
- Astra
- Neve
- OceanWP
- Twenty Twenty-Four (official WordPress theme)
You can browse themes in your WordPress dashboard under Appearance > Themes.
Step 5: Customize Your Site
Go to Appearance > Customize to:
- Add your logo
- Change colors and fonts
- Set your homepage
- Edit header and footer
No coding needed. Just point, click, and adjust.
Step 6: Add Pages
Most basic websites include:
- Home
- About
- Services or Products
- Contact
- Blog (optional)
You can create pages in Pages > Add New, and build layouts using the Block Editor (also known as Gutenberg).
Want more flexibility? Install a drag-and-drop builder like:
- Elementor (free and easy to use)
- Spectra
- Beaver Builder
Step 7: Install Helpful Plugins
Plugins add extra features without coding.
Some must-haves:
- Yoast SEO (search engine optimization)
- Contact Form 7 or WPForms (create forms)
- WooCommerce (for online stores)
- UpdraftPlus (backup your site)
- Wordfence (security)
You can install plugins under Plugins > Add New.
Step 8: Go Live
Once you’re happy with your content and layout:
- Preview your pages
- Test on mobile
- Check load speed
Then hit Publish and share your new site with the world!
